Year 4 trip – Hardwick Park (Roman workshops)

February 19, 2025

Year 4 had a brilliant day today consolidating their learning on the Roman empire and Roman Britain. They became archeologists and used special tools to dig in the soil for remains such as bones and pottery. They also made a special feast that a poor Roman might have eaten with oats and various vegetables and herbs (Needless to say, they did not do any tasting). Then, they used the herbs to create their own medicinal mixture using information about the properties of each herb and what it does for the human body. After that, they had a go at creating their own Roman Aqueducts in groups using wood of all shapes and sizes and drainage pipes.

After Lunch, the children worked in groups to create a life size map of Britannia all the way up to Hadrian’s wall, which was at the edge of the Empire. They then had to place the Roman names for Cities in the correct parts of Britannia, for example, Newcastle upon Tyne was called ‘Pons Aelius’ and ‘Aquae Sulis‘ was the Roman place name for modern day ‘Bath’. (The children could tell you the connection between Bath and Aquae Sulis)

Before home time, the children had one final activity, which was to make Roman mosaics with clay tiles and natural materials such as different types of seeds. They had so much fun throughout the day and as always, they were impeccably behaved! Well done year 4 🙂
